Its Easter here in Cyprus and a very soothingly calm one it is. Ive been meaning to write earlier but I was busy with real things such as socializing , going out , staying away from the puter , trying not to think about the puter , trying to deny the puter , but apparently you can only go so far. I wanted to share my thoughts on football hooliganism and a little bit of abstract behavior I notice around football culture in Cyprus that you might find rather disturbing.
Football in Cyprus
Three words , no disrespect to football fans. “Extremely Ridiculous Event” . Football is not properly cultured in Cyprus in a way where fans will be “all for” the wins and losses. Instead , fanaticism is a common thing with children running through puberty and even adults in their mid twenties. Many chaotic incidents have gone by unpunished through the years and apparently the police still thinks that the place to start enforcing is at football matches. Thats quite true. Try something stupid at a football match and you will going to be sorry like no other time. But you see , the real problem is outside the stadiums. Its in the streets , at each team’s HQ , places where every day people do every day things. Heres a quick story.
A well known team in Cyprus called Omonoia had some fans fanatic nutcases which tried to burn the HQ of another of the leading teams on the Island ; Apoel. They failed (not too bright I assume) to keep a fire running because the front door was made of metal and couldn’t keep it lit. Then they waited during the middle of the night until someone comes in the morning to open the HQ. The results are pretty nasty. A twenty five year old lost one eye and got the battering of his life.
Another football story , some guy roughly mid forties with his kid age 10 , walks away from the football stadium , and they get a whacking from a mob in the parking lot. Real f**king sweet? Excuse my French but this is ridiculous. What ever happened to 2008 , civilization , etc.. ?
Now ponder on this one. If that kid ; that got the battering of his life ; bruised till kingdom come ; with one eye , was your kid , how would you feel? Would you take law into your own hands? Would you trust the police (that helped in the first place). What would you do ? How do you explain to your son that he lost his eye in vein.
Or even the other kid with his Dad in the parking lot. How do you explain that your Dad is not superman against a mob of idiots that think they do this to support their team.
What I honestly believe should be done is to exemplify the culprit behind the recent HQ incident with a healthy 20 years in prison. More should be accompanied. Football is a nice game , though not my game. It is a healthy sport , a good cultured historical meaning to the history of sports yet people tend to spoil it with dangerous behavior which apparently is not something stupid you thought just then but something very pre-meditated which could result into years and years of imprisonment. The fact that it is pre-meditated can effectively give off 20+ years of imprisonments to guilty parties and I sincerely hope the new police chief in Cyprus considers exemplifying plenty of them.
To the parents of both kids that got battered in football matches and because of football matches , I am very sorry.
To the parents that have children that managed to get into enough trouble to hurt other people and especially children because of football , I am even more sorry.
