Hi Cliff,

Lets stretch the whole flight simulator software thing so you can get a fair view on what the above than average user would expect from it and what you can really get.

First off , my flight sims run on Linux only (which doesn't seem to be a problem for you :) ).

Two very well written mature flight sims are currently available. One is flightgear , which is part of the FOSS while as the other is X-Plane which is commercial.

X-Plane claims to be the most comprehensive in the world while as I could debate with that IMHO.

FlightGear is naked out of the box so you have to spend some time much like any other *nix app messing around with some configuration and installing new maps/scenery/planes/etc...

Flightgear is somewhat more "oriented" with real aircraft in terms of operation while as X-Plane is more slick with a few buttons extra that make that extra bling bling.

Whichever you choose they aren't disappointing , they are both quite impressive however it depends which one will cover more of your overall requirements in a flight sim. I assume you are like me , you want to make some coffee , sit down with a cigarette , stretch your arms , taxi the runway , lift off an a380 off the ground and fly trans-atlantic :D

Take care. Please be sure to comment on your findings , I am inetresting in how other people are finding the two. I am appending the links below.

Hi Harris,

7z is a compression format required to uncompress some of the info from the ubuntu ISO/CD.

UNetbootIn configures the device (the flash drive) to be bootable. In your BIOS set the first boot device to be the flash drive and it should be fine.

If not , try another flash drive or try the same flash drive on another computer to understand which one could be causing problems.

Regards,
Mario

I have a couple of questions regarding your last few steps:

>> What is 7z?

>> How do I make my USB drive the primary boot? I tried pressing F2 before the computer boots up Windows, but when I got to the BIOS setup, the option to select the USB drive as boot sequence 1 is disabled. Any ideas? If I don't press anything when it boots up, it goes straight to Windows, ignoring the presence of my USB drive.

Thanks much

"Important note: Make sure you have 7z installed because UNetbootin requires this."

"It will take a moment so have a sip of coffee. When it has finished simply plug the drive into the computer you want to install Ubuntu on and set it as the primary boot device. This should bring you to a menu that will start the installation. This has been tested on my Asus EEE PC 1000H and it works perfectly."

Hi Mario, these guys might be brazilians, since the bots reply in portuguese like in "-[A]k0d4455/##cinestar- [Auth]: Senha errada Azimuth idiota!!", which means "wrong password Azimuth, asshole!!" and also "12424MB enviados / Media" which "enviados" means "sent". Nice tracking anyway. :D

Hi Maz , This is a quote from the open source rx2x00 site.

"They provide all the features you could expect, such as encryption, traffic monitoring, frame injection and more. Legacy drivers however do not support HostAP nor wpa_supplicant, and some of them are not stable on SMP systems yet."

I have tried deauth attacks in recent audits , it seems to work just fine. Who said it doesn't work? :P

I have tried deauth attacks in recent audits , it seems to work just fine. Who said it doesn’t work?

Great review of the EEE PC 1000H. One question though: You said the wireless chipset supports injection. Most of the information I am seeing says that it does not. Is this verified? Have you tried it? I know the chipset drivers currently support monitor mode, but I have not seen anyone getting packet injection working. A little more elaboration would be awesome. Thanks.

First of all thanks for using Zenoss, it sounds like you're quite the demanding sysadmin, I hope we can continue to evolve to meet your needs. While Zenoss doesn't provide every feature you mention, our goal is to provide a flexible, easy-to-administer platform that suits the needs most admins and can be extended to provide whatever may be missing. So thanks for the feedback and please stay active in the Community and let us know what we can do to continue to be your monitoring platform of choice.

Thanks,
Matt Ray

Thank you for your feedback.

Peter I have had a lot of experience with nagios and I have also successfully deployed scripts in the passed that allow you to ensure proper architecture with nagios based on real network architecture (thank god for CDP , snmp and all the rest).

Unfortunately the problem is in the software. Nagios is time consuming to configure and the structure cannot allow you to define many standardized practices today in networking. As for dotcom monitor , well you cannot deploy a monitoring system for an NSP grade network using an online service now can you ?

Hazard , first off please allow me to apologize on behalf of the wp plugin that tags the site. As for complex network topology mapping and monitoring , I believe it can be done by bringing in the "wrongs" from the software in a corrected form into the lower layers in the form of a standard protocol , much like LLDP can do for you today but with a little bit of "art" in it. I am only referring to the same kind of automation that exists in many functions in IP.

A project that deals with such automated features is ANA (Autonomic Network Architecture) which I have looked into recently and seems to promise quite a few automated features to some approaches on IP. The same thing can be applicable to a lower layer protocol that would assist your network in keeping its socks up (including the administrator) through the use of intelligent network monitoring and mapping.

I don't think that you will ever get any complex network which can be monitored automatically without tweaking. The only way to achieve that is by using standardized network designs, which won't happen IMO.

Also I want to say that auto-linking of various words to tags is quite distracting. :)

Hi there, quite interesting article. thanks for that. But seems that you have mentioned only Zenoss. Take a look at Nagios at www.nagios.org or Dotcom Monitor at http://www.dotcom-monitor.com The first is open source software, has a lot of features. But you have to poesess tech skills to set it up. The second one is free and paid online service, very powerful.

I want to believe that Swissport will make the change. If they are not professionals then who is.
I hate to think that this is a cultural thing. This is who we are and this is how we go about our lives.

I hope thinks change.

Personally I never had the stamina to investigate all these attempts... as you mentioned there close to zero chance to catch anyone. But you actually managed to some fun out of it. :)

Hermes + government still takes care of security, not Swissport or Louis.

Personally I see security & airport in general as being much improved since the time airport was privatized. Before that most of the time nobody was even looking at what is passing through the xray machine. Now I get full search (which I hate), similar to other European airports. I don't think that a gunned policeman in a crowded area helps a lot, think of casualties. I don't recall seeing those in most of the airports I passed through.

The new ground handling companies suck and seem not to be professional, that's true. I'm sure they are already taking a lot of pressure from their customers, the airline companies. Unfortunately somehow we ended up with a strange case when both companies are bad, normally one of them should have been better and competitive forces would make the second one improve.

I've seen several articles on various websites confusing GNS3 with actual emulator. I just feel kind of sorry for Dynamips, which is a great project and has done all the hard work, and then a few years later GNS3 comes out and gets all the laurels. :)

Yes you are absolutely right. The emulation is served by dynamips from a real IOS image while as the frontend is all GNS3. I apologize for misleading that the emulation is performed by GNS3. It is not.

It seems it would be cheaper short and long term if you would just go to ebay and purchase the adaptec. The winbloze plan will require licensing of the server, some backup software and it will be a royal pain to admin, maintain and recover...IMHO

Speaking of existing products and bugs Vladimir , this might not be a bug but never the less still funny.

I was going through a crypto debug the other day , and walked into a spelling mistake in 12.4(2) :) Instead of receive , it was recieve :) Not very like Cisco is it... I know its not relevant to the bugs , but never the less they could at least have some dude pass IOS messages through a spell checker before compiling :)

Well, I've seen CRS-1. Through a cage wall in a colocation facility, and with some dudes next to it trying to make it work. :)

Seriously, with all the expansion and introduction of new IOS flavours, I'm really wondering if Cisco has any time left to fix bugs in existing products.

just a small note. You can actually treat the VTI as a normal interface thus keepalives do work on this and they eventfully keep the tunnel up.

Indeed, brown wasn't a very good choice IMO. At the same time I disagree with the point that users shouldn't be allowed to customize. I don't like when vendors consider that ALL of their users are dumb. They should allow for exceptions. :)

PC is not a toaster, make sensible defaults, but give me an option to change them if I want to.

Anyway, below is Mark's explanation on Ubuntu's choice of colors.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarkShuttleworth

Why is the default desktop in Ubuntu BROWN?

The overarching theme of the first set of Ubuntu releases is "Humanity". This drives our choice of artwork as much as our selection of packages and decisions around the installer. Our default theme in the first four releases of Ubuntu is called "Human", and it emphasises warm, human colours - brown.

Yes, that's rather unusual in a world where most desktops are blue or green, and the MacOSX has gone kitchenware. Partly, we like the fact that Ubuntu is different, warmer. The computer is not a device any more, it's an extension of your mind, your gateway to other people (by email, voip, irc, and over the web). We wanted a feel that was unique, striking, comforting, and above all, human. We chose brown. That's quite a high risk choice, because to render brown your screen has to render subtle shades of blue, and green, and red. Even slight variations from the norm can shift the "brown" substantially. But monitors and LCD screens these days are increasingly of a standard that we felt the risk was acceptable. In Hoary and Breezy we have gone with a richer, redder brown, based on feedback from lower-end laptop and LCD screen users.

there are two varieties of people... the people who choose what they want to do, and the people who are born to do what they do. One variety includes those who are good at what they do and have the capacity to become better at some point. The other variety includes people who are good at what they do and have the capacity to become the best.
Which variety do you belong to?;)
